Leader of Men by Howard Terpning.

 

This is a study of a man of the Crow tribe, wearing an eagle-feather bonnet, his bow case made of mountain lion fur, his body wrapped with an elk hide, trappings which reflect his life as one who lived close to nature and its creatures. The artist says, "I wanted to create a strong pattern of light and dark. The model was actually an Apache man, but I painted him to look like a northern plains man by changing his facial structure somewhat." (The Art of Howard Terpning - Elmer Kelton).
