The Family Tree - Saw-whet Owls by wildlife artist Carl Brenders
The Family Tree by Carl Brenders, available from Prickly Pear Galleries.
"When I discovered that the young of the saw-whet look so different from most young owls, painting them became a must. One would never believe that a young saw-whet one day will look like the adults do. The dark brown head and ochre-beige breast have nothing in common with the final adult plumage.
"Some scientists say that the strange name 'saw-whet' comes from their call, but some think that is comes from the French pioneers who would always say.'Regarde la une chouette!' (Look there , an owl!') The English took this over and their accent made it sound like "saw-whet. I go along with this second theory." - Carl Brenders.
Print released in 1995 for Earth Day 25th anniversary.
Giclee canvas released 2008.
