For most of my life, I have lived by the sea. On countless occasions, I have watched herons patrolling the foreshore, often in some surprisingly built up areas. In my painting, I wanted to show the beach before the sun has burnt off the morning mist and the tourists arrive - a time when the beach belongs to the birds!" - Matthew Hillier.
