To Capture Enemy Horses by western artist Howard Terpning

To Capture Enemy Horses by Howard Terpning.

"Blackfoot raiders have come down from their home in the north on a quest for honor and the horses of their old enemy, the Crow. Stealing horses was as natural to the Plains Indian as was hunting for buffalo. Horses were the measure of tribal and individual wealth and power on the Great Plains.

"These raiders have mustered their courage and come on foot into the heart of Crow country. It is their hope to return home riding on the backs of the ponies they will steal by stealth and under the cover of darkness. Discovery meant death for the daring. They traveled fast and light out upon the open plain in a hostile land that belonged to another.

"If they are successful in their bold venture, they will return home as heroes, and the story of their courage will be told and told again in the lodges of the People. Success will also mean that they can expect the certainty of Crow retribution." (Don Hedgpeth - Spirit of the Plains People).
