The Trooper by Frank McCarthy

The Trooper by Frank McCarthy.

"The Trooper" depicts a U.S. Cavalry trooper of the 1885 period holding his company's guidon or identification flag. It was in that year that the Cavalry guidon replaced the Stars and Stripes swallowtail which had been in use since 1863.

The upper half of the guidon displayed the regimental number in white on a red field while the lower half had the company letter in red on a white background. This style of guidon was still regulation equipment when the cavalry was unhorsed early in World War II.
