The white man’s army was at a distinct disadvantage in the land of the Apache, lacking the taste and the training for war in the wilderness of old Arizona. Newly arrived recruits from back East rode alongside frontier veterans in search of an enemy that was as elusive as smoke in the wind. Time after time, the troops came back worn down and weary…and some never came back at all.
