"It was early morning and the water of this Yellowstone pond was a little warmer than the air. The mist rose up, giving it a kind of mystical feeling. The, from out of the stillness, came this magnificent bear. Agrizzly is a phenomenal thing to see. It's so detached from human experience that at first you can hardly believe such a beast can be possible. It just looms there like a mountain and defies you."

 

But when the cubs came along, suddenly this awesome and imposing beast became something every parent could identify with. "I could imagine that this was her own private time, when she could enjoy the stillness," says Marris with an understanding smile. "It was also a time for me to reflect on what had happened to her world."
