The Staff Carrier by western artist Howard Terpning

The Staff Carrier by western artist Howard Terpning.

The artist explains that his intention with this painting was to create interesting patterns using an Indian on horseback in snow, a blue blanket, headress, and Crow equipment. He points out that the horse, well protected from the cold by a heavy growth of winter hair, does not resemble most of the higher-bred types common today. The native Indian pony tended to be relatively small by modern standards, making up in stamina and heart what he lacked in size.  (The Art of Howard Terpning - Elmer Kelton)
