The Drift on Skull Creek Pass by James Bama

Skull Creek Pass lies on an old cattle trail between Cody, Wyoming, and Billings, Montana; in a snowstorm the dangers of the Pass assume nightmare proportions. It's the one place cowboys worry about most in mid-winter cattle drives. In this re-creation, the heavy snows came the first night out, without warning, piling up in deep drifts. The cows, belly-deep in snow, panicked. Some broke through the fence and scattered. It was absolute turmoil with the black cows frenzied and frantic against the now-white landscape. The cowboys, all seasoned veterans, managed to round them up and return to Trail Creek.
