Soldier Hat by western artist Howard Terpning

Soldier Hat by Howard Terpning.

"The Apache was as tough as the country in which he lived. Arizona was his stronghold and he knew that lonesome land, every hidden mountain pass and secret desert pool in the rock. The Apache seemed primitive in comparison to the Great Plains tribes that developed elaborate cultures based upon the buffalo. There was nothing of feathers and flamblyance about the Apache. He lived in crude stick shelters called 'wickiups' and scavenged for food like his wild brother, the wolf.

Toward the end, the army pursued him relentlessly, and he remained alert and ready to run or to lie in ambush. A soldier's hat floating downstream was a warning that danger was about and on his trail. At a signal to the camp, the small band would swiftly disappear into the high rocks and ridges."
(Spirit of the Plains People - Don Hedgpeth).
