In the bluish light of a full moon, a cavalry troop force marches to place itself closer to the hostiles by daylight. More than once in frontier campaigns, army units slipped out of camp in darkness and eluded Indian spies. Thus did Colonel Ranald Mackenzie surprise and rout a winter encampment in Texas's Palo Duro Canyon.
