Broken Silence - Mule deer fawns and Red squirrel by wildlife artist Carl Brenders

The idea for a painting can remain in your head for a long time, but what you need most are the real ingredients to make it true. Then you discover certain trees or plants or rocks which are exactly what you need. In this case, it was some sycamore trees which inspired me to combine them with young mule deer. I need something exciting to paint, with a lot of texture. Since the bark of the sycamore peels off every year, the trunk has a lot of texture, with wonderful tints and colours: the challenge! I wanted to play with light in this painting and with the element of camouflage in nature. Fawns have no odour and are very well camouflaged, which protects them against predators. The camouflage worked too well! I exaggerated and had to add more light on their bodies to make them more visible. This was not so obvious, and one has to have some insight in anatomy and volume to do this.

"When the painting was finished I felt that the left side was begging for some action. I painted the red squirrel screeching at the fawns, which created a nice contact between the right and the left sides of the painting. It brought me to the title 'Broken Silence'." - Carl Brenders from his new book "Pride of Place" (2007)
