Catching the Scent - Polar Bear by Daniel Smith

"The polar bear is a noble-looking animal...of enormous strength, living bravely and warm amid eternal ice...polar bears are the unrivaled master-existences of this icebound solitude." - John Muir, 1881.
"Polar bears are the most powerful and formidable of the bear family. I tried to portray this by keeping the bear dominant in my composition. I also attempted to give the viewer a sense of confinement among the cascading walls of ice and rock. I wanted the viewer to feel vulnerable in the presence of this magnificent bear as it turns its head in catching the scent. - Daniel Smith.
