Changing of the Guard - bald eagles by Stephen Lyman
Changing of the Guard by Stephen Lyman
Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Glacier National Park during the salmon run once hosted the largest gathering of eagles in the lower 48 states. The waters of McDonald Creek once literally ran red with salmon and hundreds of eagles blanked the trees on the riverbanks, swooping down en masse to feed on these incredibly powerful fish.

Sadly, this awesome spectacle of nature is a thing of the past. Dams have changed the cycles and flow of the water and in turn, decimated the salmon population. Correspondingly, the numbers of eagles, grizzlies and other predators that were once dependent upon the annual run have diminished.
