An Early Light Breakfast - Bison and Osprey by wildlife artist Rod Frederick

An Early Light Breakfast by Rod Frederick.
Summer in the Cascade Mountains.

"There are two stories going on here. One is in the osprey nest, and the other is in the forest where the bison are. By putting them in a diptych, I can have them both separate but still together in their habitat, which is the way they actually live. The Ospreys have returned to nest in the north, now that the ice has melted off the high mountain lakes. They can winter only in areas where lakes are ice-free because they feed exclusively on fish. The bison used to be as widespread as the osprey, but they were more easily and thoroughly hunted. I symbolize that by having the osprey in the light, but the bison just coming out of the shadows." - Rod Frederick.
